What’s in a library? There was a time when the word “library” brought to mind images of shelves and shelves of books. Modern libraries are much more than warehouses for books, though. Here in Bowman, we have worked hard to provide media in many forms. Books, magazines, audio books, and videos are all available through our website, www.bowmanlibrary.com, as are both desktop and laptop computers with access to the Internet.

Thanks to the Bowman Rotary Club and the Bowman County Commission, we have the Rosetta Stone language learning program installed on 3 of our computers, which is available for public use, free of charge! Learn Spanish or English. In addition to these materials, we have many other programs and services available.

As many of you know, our librarian Leah King hosts Story Time every Wednesday at 10:30AM. This program is open to children ages 3 to 6 and is a great way to introduce your children to the magic of reading. Note to parents and grandparents: There will be no Story Time on Wednesday, March 14th.

The North Dakota Humanities Council, Pioneer Trails Regional Museum and the library have combined resources to hold a Civil War book discussion. We have has a good turn out for the first two books, March by Geraldine Brooks, and Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam by James McPherson, and look forward to a successful turn out for the final meeting, which will be held on March 27th at 7PM in the Frontier Room of the Museum. The book we will be discussing, America’a War edited by Edward L. Ayers, is available at the library. If you haven’t already, stop in and sign up.

In addition to these book discussions, Dr. Frank Varney, Assistant Professor of History from Dickinson State University, will be giving a talk about the American Civil War on Saturday, March 10th at 3:30 at the library. Please stop in and learn a little about the most deadly war our country has ever seen.

In preparation for the upcoming Summer Reading Program, we are holding a penny drive at the library to help with the cost of materials. This year’s program theme is Dream Big READ! We are planning many exciting things and hope for good community participation. We will keep you informed of the scheduling details as we get closer to the summer months. If you’d like to help out, we’d love to take those pesky pennies off your hands. Next time you dig through the couch cushions, think of us.

A book doesn’t have to be new to be a great read. Often, they gain late popularity through word-of-mouth or by being made into a movie. For example, The Hunger Games, The Help and many books by the author Nicolas Sparks fall into this category. If there is something everyone is talking about, call or stop in to see if we have it. If it is checked out to someone else, we’d be glad to put your name on the waiting list.

As for new books, we have acquired a variety of material, including non-fiction books on everything from geology to floor plans, cooking to meditating. We have plenty new fiction books, including Celebrity in Death by JD Robb and A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison. We also both books from Phil Rustad’s Dan Neumann Series, Dart and Alamo, North Dakota.

INCOMING!!
